Hantuchova Wins Tight Quarter Final
Daniela Hantuchova has a semi final meeting with top seed Amelie Mauresmo
tomorrow following her upset of the tournament's No.3 player, Ai Sugiyama 6-1
7-6 in the Hastings Direct International Championships this afternoon.
Both players struggled in this afternoon's blustery quarter finals. Hantuchova,
who looked calm and focussed throughout the match, mixing controlled aggression
with angled forehands to move her Japanese opponent around the court.
Although she breezed through the first set without any problems, the Slovak
found herself in trouble in the second. Having gone for two big serves to
save set points at 5-3 down and win the game, she managed to break back and
force the tiebreak. She earned a total of four match points and tried to
finish in style before nerves crept in when she failed with four glaring
groundstroke errors that normally she would have made.
Sugiyama failed to take advantage of coming from 5-2 down to 6-6 in the
tiebreak, and surrendered on a double fault when facing her fifth match point.
Looking to the sky with relief after coming through her tight match, and waving
to her supporters afterwards, she later said she enjoyed the experience of
being at Eastbourne. "I kept fighting all the way through, even when I was
down. It's tough to play your first match on grass, but I already won two
before and have beaten the number three seed today.
"I felt great in the match and am looking forward to playing Amelie - she is
playing great also, " she said.
