Hantuchova downs Mauresmo
Daniela Hantuchova bettered top seed Amelie Mauresmo to reach the final of the
Hastings Direct International in Eastbourne on Friday.
The Slovak battled back from a set down to see off the former Wimbledon
semi-finalist 4-6 6-4 6-4.
Svetlana Kuznetsova booked her place in the final after also coming from behind
to beat fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva.
The second seed lost the opening set 3-6 before closing out her victory in damp
conditions 7-6 6-1.
Mauresmo, who has clinched two titles this season, had the early advantage in
the first semi-final before light rain fell on the south coast.
The match was delayed for 50 minutes and it was Hantuchova who benefited from
the stoppage, quickly finding her rhythm.
The Slovak held her nerve and bided her time until her French opponent netted
a drop volley to put the match back on level terms.
Mauresmo then double-faulted three times in the sixth game of the decider to
hand Hanutchova a second break in the decider.
The former world number five is finding her form just in time for Wimbledon
after struggling for the last year.
Hantuchova has improved since being reunited with her British coach Nigel Sears.
Meanwhile, Martina Navratilova lost the Eastbourne Cup consolation final to
Italy's Silvia Farina Elia.
