Hantuchova beats Mauresmo for Eastbourne tennis final
Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova toppled top seed Amelie Mauresmo of France 4-6,
6-4, 6-4 to reach the final of the Eastbourne International tennis tournament
on Friday.
This was the first final since October 2002 for Hantuchova who once ranked
fifth but dropped to 54 after a torrid 2003 due to her diet.
By beating fourth-ranked Mauresmo, the Slovak smiled again, saying that "I'm
back where I want to be. It has been a while since I've played like I have this
week."
With her victory, Hantuchova will face Svetlana Kuznetsova in Saturday's final
after the second-seeded 18-year-old eliminated fellow Russian teenager Vera
Zvonareva 3-6, 7-6 and 6-1.
After losing the first set in 42 minutes, the Slovak kept her nerve in the
latter stages, converting her second set point at 5-4 as Mauresmo netted a drop
volley.
As both struggled to hold serve in the decider, Hantuchova moved 5-4 ahead and
Mauresmo crumbled again with withering returns.
