Daniela, does that make up for last year?
(Hantuchova) Absolutely. It’s been like a dream week for me. I
had so much fun with Dominik I just can’t tell you how happy
I am to be here with Dominik, winning Hopman Cup is something
special. Also it is amazing for our country because there are
just five million people live there. Having won Fed Cup already
and now the Hopman Cup, we are dominating the world in team
championships. I think that just proves that, as Dominik says,
that a little country can be sometime great.
Congratulations to you both, well done. Daniela all week you were
back to your best form, back to being like number five in the world.
It seemed to desert you a little bit today.
(Hantuchova) I have been very pleased with the way I played the first
three matches. I can’t say that I was on top of my form today. I
wasn’t happy with the way I played. To be honest, I was a little off
rhythm and didn’t feel like I had the same control on my shots. What
the most important thing is for me is that I got through the match;
I wasn’t able to do that before when things weren’t going well for me.
I just kept fighting and kept my nerves and mentally I was really
tough. That means more than anything to me.
You said you toughed it out mentally. Does that give you good
confidence going to Melbourne, in a week’s time?
(Hantuchova) Yeah for sure. I couldn’t ask for a better preparation
than this. It gives me a lot of confidence. A lot of hope. Especially
getting through a match like this, just shows me that even if I don’t
play well, I still have ways to get through the match. I am just really
happy with the way things have been going this week. It feels good going
to Sydney and then to Melbourne.
Dominik it seemed to mean a lot to you in the end, when you won. Tell
us how important it is for you to play for your country and to do well?
(Hrbaty) I like to go in the team competition. Tennis is most of the
tournaments you are alone, so I always enjoy a team. I like someone
behind me and supporting me. All the team matches I play for my
country in Slovakia. I always enjoy. I always, somehow play very well
and especially when I see Slovak people or when we play Davis Cup, I
just can play to 120 percent. I don’t know how, but it just happens.
I can’t explain it. There are certain types of players that like to
play for a team and play much better in the team than they play in
individual tournaments. I would play like I play in Davis Cup every
time I go in a tournament I would be, for sure, in top 10 all year
round. I don’t know. Maybe I can’t pump up myself all that much,
for every tournament I pay.
Can you keep going like that though? That second set of the singles
was amazing.
(Hrbaty) If you mean to continue to Australian Open. I hope I can keep it
up. I played very well last year. I won two tournaments in a row. I was
in the third round of the Australian Open, so I did last year. This is
different now. It is another year, but I will do my best. I hope I pass
my first in Auckland and then I hope there is a chance to continue to play
this way.
Your own form Dominik. Would you consider it better this year than it was
twelve months ago?
(Hrbaty) It is tough to say. I play the game a little differently than
I did last year. Last year I was very solid. I served very well. This year
I am still struggling a little with the serve, but with the ground strokes,
I feel like I am not only solid but I am also hitting the winners. When I
played Guillermo I felt like he couldn’t hit a winner, against me. I was
everywhere and I felt like his shots couldn’t hurt me so that is why I was
confident and playing so well. I knew that it only depended on me as to how
I was going to play.
You have reached the quarters of the Australian Open. Do you feel you have
the game at the moment, as you said with your ground strokes, to go pretty
deep into the Australian Open?
(Hrbaty) With the Grand Slams your want to keep up a great level. I don’t
say good. It has to be a great level, to go so far. That is the toughest
thing in men’s tennis. Whoever does it, he has to go there. If I am able
to keep this level, I wouldn’t only have to go to the quarters, it could
be much further. But you know how it is in men’s tennis. There are so many
tough players.
What about forcing your way into the top 10. You have just beaten the n
umber seven today. Are you aiming to do that in the near future again?
(Hrbaty)Yes I take it a little bit differently. This is a team competition,
I beat him in a team competition, I beat almost everybody in Davis Cup. I
beat Kurten in Brazil. I won two matches there. I won two matches in Argentina,
which is very tough. I won two matches in Sweden and they became the champions.
In Davis Cup or team competition, I just play unbelievably. Whoever is there,
I see him as small as 1 cm. I feel like I am the king of the court sometimes.
I t is strange. Like I said I am a team player. In the tournaments I always try.
It is my dream to become top 10. It is not easy. I was close many times. I
missed by one match, once. I will do my best to go there. To make my dreams
true, but if it doesn’t, I am happy with the way I play tennis and I enjoy it.
Daniela, can you just tell us a little bit about this tournament? It seems you
have so much fun out there especially obviously in the mixed when it was all
over. Generally the format and coming to Perth is fun?
(Hantuchova) Yes we had such an incredible week. As I said many times. I always
enjoy being here do much. Especially playing with Dominik. It was so much fun.
I was so nervous when I was watching him play today. I still can’t believe the
way he played. It was amazing, seeing him play that way. Especially the second
set. As he said if he keeps going like that he can be in the top 10 for sure.
We had a lot of fun not only on the court but off the court. It went so fast,
it feels like we have been here two days. It feels great to be leaving finally
with a nice trophy too.
Dominik’s feelings of playing for his country, has that rubbed off on you? Or
you felt like that anyway, representing your country?
(Hantuchova) For me it of course something special, whenever I can play for
my country. I feel really proud that I have now got two titles. A Fed Cup
title and now the Hopman Cup title, so that is something very special for
me and nobody is going to take that away. It feels great.
The women’s top 10 is very even. There doesn’t seem to be a lot between
number one and number ten, everybody is very even. Who do you see as the
biggest threat?
(Hantuchova) It is tough to say. As you said there are so many tough players
at the moment. I think it is great for women’s tennis, because it makes it
so interesting. You never know who is going to win at the tournaments. You
have to play well form the first round. It is not like in the old days that
you got through the first three rounds without any problems. You have to
make sure you give 100 percent every match. That is what I try to do. For m
e I don’t really care who is on the other side, because if I know who is
playing because I know if I play well it doesn’t really matter who is there.
It is more about me and I just have to focus on doing the right thing. Then
I will see what happens.
Dominik did you get a chance to catch up with Karol Kucera and talk about
what it was like when he won the Cup?
(Hrbaty) Not yet. Maybe we will talk about it in Melbourne. I know that
he was very happy. That time was a big thing in Slovakia. It was the first
time ever that we had won a team competition. It was before the world team
cup, before the Fed Cup. I guess it is still a very big thing. A lot of people
called me. Our Prime Minister was watching the match. He always sends me a
text message after the matches. We have fun because he was presenting the
trophy to the best tennis player of the year in Slovakia. I told him, because
he always sends me a text message after the match, that when he is there,
we always win, so I though he could change his job and come with me to the
tournaments. Many people said, yes that would be a good idea. I am happy
that we get support from these kinds of people. It is always nice to hear
that. These are the things you always to remember. You are remembered as
being the champion. Nobody remembers the finalist.
Have you got a text message yet?
(Hrbaty) I haven’t switched on the phone yet. Hopefully I will get one.
Is the Hopman Cup the only international trophy that Slovakia has won?
(Hrbaty) No we won the Fed Cup.
At the moment?
(Hrbaty) What do you mean?
Any other Slovakian sports?
(Hrbaty) We are world champions in hockey. Which is much bigger in
Slovakia, hockey is the first sport. I don’t know if there are
any other teams.
So tennis is leading the way.
(Hrabty) Tennis, we are. Two times. But you can’t compare with
hockey. Hockey players are gods, in our country.
Do you both plan to be here next year? Do you feel that it is
a good way to ease into the summer?
(Hrabty) Yes I think so. The reason why I came here was that
I wanted to play good matches. I always like to play in the
beginning of the year, 2, 3 or 4 matches because you get the
feeling of playing matches. If you lose in the first round in
a tournament and then you lose another first round then before
the Open it is only two matches. Here I get three or four matches
and I am only going to the second tournament. I am very happy to
be here. I think it is a great tournament for the players to start
here.
You would obviously like to come back together and try to defend your
title together next year.
(Hrbaty) Of course. I have a new hobby. Collecting balls. Diamond balls.
