Hantuchova returns to spot of biggest victory
21-year-old won 2002 title before off-court issues

When Daniela Hantuchova took the Pacific Life Open title in 2002, many assumed
the victory was a coronation for the next big star in tennis.
Hantuchova had the model looks, but unlike the other glamour girl Anna
Kournikova, she had a title. A big one.
As the No. 18 seed, Hantuchova defeated Martina Hingis in the finals to claim
her first Tier I title.
"It seems like a week ago it happened, and it's so nice to come here and
remember all the nice things I've done here," Hantuchova said. "It's such a
great tournament and I love being here."
Hantuchova was ranked No. 26 when she won in Indian Wells, and got to as high
as No. 5 after the Australian Open the following year.
However, things fell apart. There were some personal problems, but Hantuchova
wouldn't go into details.
"I don't want to go too deep into that. It's the same things in a normal life,"
Hantuchova said. "Sometimes things go well and sometimes they don't. It's how
you deal with it when it's rough and not going your way. I've learned so much
from those experiences and I'm actually thankful for the things that happened
to me. Now I think I'm more aware of what I have to do to make things go right"
Among the things Hantuchova had to deal with publicly was her weight, as she
became rail thin, and she had breakdowns on court that resulted in tears.
In 2003, she only had two victories against top-20 players. Last year,
Hantuchova dropped to No. 54 before getting her game back on track.
"Even through it was difficult, I still loved being on the court," Hantuchova
said. "It wasn't easy at times, but if I didn't like it, I don't think I would
be here. It just proves how much I love the game and how much I enjoy being out
there on the court and out there playing for the people."
So far this year, Hantuchova has a 10-5 record and has solid wins against Elena
Bovina and Elena Likhovtseva.
"The last couple of tournaments have proved it, I can play against anyone again,
if I just keep doing the right things all the time and making sure I give my
best every match, and I will create the opportunities," Hantuchova said. "If I
take advantage of those, it will be good."
Hantuchova looks healthier now, and she appears in this month's edition of
Italian Vogue for their sports edition.
On the court, Hantuchova said her focus is in the right place.
"I have worked very hard in the offseason and made sure I do everything it takes
to be effective on the match court again." Hantuchova said. "It's making sure I
give my best and always do the right thing, and having fun again and enjoying
the game."
