Player eager for previous success By Dustin Dow Enquirer staff writer ADVERTISEMENT MASON - It could have been a lot easier for Daniela Hantuchova Friday if she had just closed out that first set. As it was, Hantuchova lost the first set of her quarterfinal match against Yoon Jeong Cho in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open but regrouped in time to win 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-1. Still, it took her two hours and seven minutes to finish Cho, and Hantuchova would have preferred a quick match. "It was tough," Hantuchova said. "I gave up so many chances. Especially with the heat, it's not fun to be there for another two hours and trying to get through the match. The conditions were really difficult." She relinquished five set points in the first set before allowing Cho to come back and win the set in a tiebreak that Cho dominated by taking a 4-0 lead. "Maybe I was trying to go for too much and making too many mistakes," Hantuchova said. "The important thing was I tried to hang in there in the second set and kept fighting. ... In the third set, I felt like I was in much better shape than her. She was getting a bit tired." Hantuchova moved on to today's semifinals, where she will face Akiko Morigami. This is Hantuchova's third semifinal appearance in the last two years and the first time she has reached the semifinals of a WTA tournament twice in the same season since 2002. Hantuchova advanced to the semifinals of a Tier II tournament in Doha, Qatar, in February. "I feel like I'm much more aware of what I'm doing on the court," Hantuchova said. "Not only technically but also mentally." Since Doha, however, she is 11-10, though she defeated two top-20 players in March. Ranked No. 26, Hantuchova, 22, isn't quite the player she was in 2002 when she won her only WTA title at Indian Wells and began 2003 with her career-high ranking of No. 5. But signs of a summer resurgence have her optimistic that her ranking will keep climbing. "I'm better equipped to be ready for situations like this," Hantuchova said. "I know what I have to do. Just try to make sure I do the right things. Everything just happened so fast to me (the previous two years), I didn't really realize what was going on."
