Players Donating to Assist with Hurricane Relief
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y.
The stars of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour are stepping up to help those affected
in the southeast United States by the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Belgium's Kim Clijsters announced that she will be donating $25,000 to the
American Red Cross, while Serena Williams has decided to contribute $100 for
every ace she hits from the US Open through the end of the year.
In addition, Serena said she would be auctioning off the $40,000 pair of
diamond earrings she wore while playing this year in New York.
Venus Williams said she would be assisting former tennis great Zina Garrison
with her Yellow Shoelace Charitable organization that is coordinating some
projects to help those in need.
The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour will also be teaming up with the ATP on a charitable
initiative to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina, which will include an auction
of donated and autographed tennis equipment, apparel and memorabilia throughout
the remainder of the US Open for an auction to benefit the American Red Cross
hurricane relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas in Louisiana, Mississippi
and Alabama.
The auction will begin on September 11, the anniversary of the disaster that
struck New York City four years ago. Among the Tour stars that have offered
to donate items are Clijsters, Serena, Venus, Mary Pierce, Daniela Hantuchova,
Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Amelie Mauresmo,
among others.
