Hantuchova Survives Medina Garrigues Threat
LUXEMBOURG, Luxembourg
It was a mixed day for seeded players at the FORTIS Championships Luxembourg
on Tuesday, with Daniela Hantuchova and Dinara Safina advancing but Silvia
Farina Elia crashing and burning as first round action continued at the
$585,000 Tier II event.
Hantuchova, the No.5 seed in Luxembourg, was pushed to the limit in the first
two sets against Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues before cruising to a 67(2)
76(2) 60 victory in the feature evening match. The two-hour, 28-minute victory
was much tougher for Hantuchova than her straight-sets victory in their only
other career encounter, as the Spaniard ran down everything that was fired at
her through the first two sets. However, once Hantuchova secured the second
set tie-break, the momentum shifted completely in the Slovak's favour. The
22-year-old Hantuchova has been steadily returning to the form that took her
to the Top 5 in the world in the early part of 2003. She recently reached
the final at the Tier II event in Los Angeles, and has also reached semifinals
this year at Doha and Cincinnati.

That was a long match, and Dani missed 2 gp's before making it 5-0.
