Pennetta, Hantuchova, Safina Advance on Day 1
FILDERSTADT, Germany—Flavia Pennetta , playing in her first Porsche Tennis
Grand Prix, opened main draw singles action on Centre Court with a 75 62 win
over Julia Schruff on Monday. Pennetta recorded her 33rd win of the season
and will next face No. 4 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne in the second round of the
$650,000 Tier II event.
Pennetta, the reigning US Open doubles champion (with Raymond), claimed her
fourth win in five attempts against Schruff. The German’s only win against
Pennetta came last month in a first round upset at the US Open. All five of
their meetings have come in first round action, with two of the matches decided
in three sets.
Pennetta is having a career year, highlighted by winning 20 of 26 matches on
clay and capturing back-to-back Tier III clay court titles at Bogota and
Acapulco. The Italian also posted her best Grand Slam mark at Wimbledon this
year when she reached the fourth round before falling to Mary Pierce.
Slovak Daniela Hantuchova booked a spot in the second round when she defeated
wild card Meghann Shaughnessy 64 60. Hantuchova, a finalist here in 2002,
improved her Filderstadt record to 7-4 and is making her fifth appearance at
the tournament.
Hantuchova’s best result this year came in Los Angeles where she reached the
finals before falling to Kim Clijsters. A quarterfinalist last week in
Luxembourg, the former Top 5 player could next face No.7 seed Patty Schnyder
in their 12th career meeting. Schnyder leads the head-to-head series 7-4, but
Hantuchova claimed a three-set victory in their last match up on the hard
courts of New Haven in August.
In the only other main draw singles match on the day, Dinara Safin advanced
to the second round with a 62 62 win over German wild card Sandra Kloesel.
Safina, a two-time titlist in 2005 (Paris and Prague), picked up her 30th
match win this year and could next face No.8 seed Anastasia Myskina. The
19-year-old Russian is making her Filderstadt debut.
Currently in its 28th year, Filderstadt is the fifth-oldest women’s event on
the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and the longest women’s-only indoor event in
Europe. It boasts an impressive roster of former champions, including
six-time winner Martina Navratilova, four-time champions Tracy Austin and
Martina Hingis, and two-time winners Anke Huber, Lindsay Davenport and
Kim Clijsters. The only other active player to have captured the title here
is current world No.6 Mary Pierce, who won the title back in 1993, but is not
entered in this year's event.
