Top seed Nadia Petrova has been handed a tricky first round tie at the ASB
Classic in Auckland.
The Russian, ranked nine in the world, will face Argentine Mariana Diaz-Oliva
at the ASB Tennis Centre.
Diaz-Oliva is ranked 52 and has one singles title to her name in Palermo in
2002.
The right-hander from Buenos Aires has lost all three matches she has played
against Petrova, but the Russian is confident that she has the game to win
through to the second round.
"She is mentally strong and a fighter but she doesn't have such a dangerous and
aggressive game," said Petrova.
"It's good to play a player that you know because you know how to prepare. It's
better than playing a qualifier who will already have two or three matches
under their belt."
The glamour tie of the round sees the two most recent champions playing each
other - 2005 winner Katarina Srebotnik faces Eleni Daniilidou, who was crowned
in 2003 and 2004.
Other highlights in the opening round sees eighth seed Vera Zvonareva taking on
Paolo Suarez, wildcard Jelena Dokic facing German Julia Schruff and a battle
of the experience against youth with American campaigner Amy Frazier playing
world junior number one Victoria Azarenka.
Number two seed Daniela Hantuchova begins her tournament against Ukrainian
Yulia Beygelzimer and the Slovak star admits she knows nothing about her
opponent, ranked 154 in the world.
"Every first match of the year is tough because you don't know what to expect
but I have had a great preparation over the last couple of weeks," said
Hantuchova.
"I feel I need a few more days to get use to the heat and everything and
hopefully by Monday or Tuesday I will be ready to go."
The tournament begins on Monday with TV coverage on TV ONE and LIVE streaming
of the action here on tvnz.co.nz.
