Hantuchova struggles through

It proved to be a struggle but ASB Classic second seed and poster-girl Daniela
Hantuchova grabbed a place in the second round after a 2-6 6-3 6-2 win over
Ukrainian Yulia Beygelzimer.
Beygelzimer, who won a feeder tournament to claim a place in the main draw,
defied her lowly world ranking of 154 to come out of the blocks quickest and
raced into a 5-0 lead before a stunned Centre Court crowd.
A stinging forehand and some nifty drop shots bedazzled her opponent, ranked
17 in the world.
Hantuchova finally found some of her game to pull back to 5-2 but her opponent
closed out the set and looked on course for one of the biggest upset wins
ever at the ASB Classic.
The turning point came in the seventh game of the second set when Hantuchova
finally got a break on Beygelzimer's serve after squandering a host of
opportunities.
After that the challenge of the Ukrainian started to wilt and as Hantuchova
sealed the second set the writing was on the wall when the Slovakian went 3-0
up in the decider.
Luckily for the ASB Classic organisers there was no more fight from the
unseeded Beygelzimer and the number two seed set up a match against American
Jill Craybas in round two.
She admitted that she needed to raise her game against Craybas.
"I have played her a couple of times but I can't remember how I did. I know I
need to play much better than I did today.
"I need to play much more aggressively than I did and at the same time not
giving away so many easy points. I must try to focus on my serve and bring my
first-serve percentage up."
