Hantuchova just into Auckland WTA semis
January 4, 2006
Second seed and crowd favourite Daniela Hantuchova survived a major scare in
the first tennis quarterfinal at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
The Slovakian was favoured to win after breezing through a straight sets
victory against American Jill Craybas but was pushed to her limit by unseeded
Israeli Tzipora Obziler.
Hantuchova fought back from 1-5 down in the first set to win it 7-5 but Obziler
battled hard to hold her off in the next set, winning 6-3.
Hantuchova made some critical errors in the deciding set, but appeared to hold
her nerve better than her opponent in the final stages, reeling off four
straight games to win 7-5 after trailing 5-3.
"I don't know how I pulled through. She was amazing, I was very surprised at
the level of commitment she showed," Hantuchova said afterwards.
She said she was going to have to get used to her opponents chasing down
every ball she hit - as Obziler did.
"Hopefully I will be a little but more prepared for my next match, but as I
said, I have to give her all the credit for the way she played."
Obziler, who played in the qualifying rounds to reach the tournament proper,
wasn't expected to reach the quarters, but pulled off an upset straight sets
win over fifth seed Katarina Srebotnik from Slovenia.
