Sharapova, Hantuchova reach Zurich finals
ZURICH, SWITZERLAND (TICKER) --
Maria Sharapova has advanced to yet another final.
The second seed from Russia, Sharapova reached the Zurich Open final with a
7-6 (7-3), 6-2 triumph over unseeded Katarina Srebotnik on Saturday.
The U.S. Open champion, who has won 11 straight matches, had to retire last
week in Moscow because of a right foot strain, but she has not dropped a set
here this week and will play in her sixth final of the season on Sunday.
Sharapova faced a set point on serve in the 12th game, but she saved it with
an ace, then easily took the tiebreak and cruised in the second set.
Sharapova next will play unseeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova, who upset
third-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-4, 6-2, at the $1.34 million Tier I
hardcourt tournament.
Hantuchova, who was in her first Tier I semifinal since Montreal in August 2002,
had advanced to the penultimate round in a walkover when top seed Amelie
Mauresmo pulled out of the tournament Thursday with right shoulder inflammation.
Hantuchova believes she had been putting too much pressure on herself, and that
lowering her expectations has helped her play.
"I guess it just comes with experience, and becoming a little older,"
Hantuchova said. "It shows you that it's not going to help you in anything, and
that the most important thing is to have fun with whatever you do - it doesn't
have to be tennis, it goes for any job - and then I think the results come much
quicker."
Sharapova, who lost in the final here two years ago to Alicia Molik, is 4-1
lifetime against Hantuchova
