[新聞] Hantuchova Outdoes World No.1 Wozniacki
PARIS, France - Daniela Hantuchova joined Katarina Studenikova and
Dominika Cibulkova as the third Slovak ever to beat a reigning No.1
on Friday afternoon, stunning Caroline Wozniacki in the third round
of the French Open - even more stunning was the scoreline of
the one-hour, 13-minute win: 61 63.
After the two players each held their opening serve games, the No.28-seeded
Hantuchova went on an absolute tear, winning nine straight games for a hefty
61 40 lead. Her trademark down-the-line winners in full swing,
Hantuchova was on the brink of her first win over a No.1, and although
Wozniacki won three games to close to 4-3 it was too late as the Slovak
won eight of the last 10 points too.
"I felt really good on the court today. I felt like I stuck to my gameplan
and did exactly what I had to do, what I discussed with my coach before
the match," Hantuchova said. "When she came back in the second set I just
tried to stick to what was working for me during the match and focused on
my service games, making sure I served well and was staying aggressive.
I think that was the key.
"I have to say today was probably one of my best matches."
Hantuchova is the third woman from her country to beat a reigning No.1,
after Studenikova's upset of nine-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles
at Wimbledon in 1996 and Cibulkova beating Wozniacki in Sydney this year.
"She played very well. She played very, very well today," Wozniacki said.
"She knew what she was going to go out there and do. She was just too good.
I just need to get back on the court and practice, and come back stronger."
With No.2 seed Kim Clijsters going out the day before, this is the first time
in the Open Era the Top 2 seeds have both lost at a major before
the fourth round.
"Tennis is a sport where only one can win. There are a lot of great players
out there," Wozniacki added. "Kim had a tough loss, I had a tough loss.
That's what happens. It's a game - when you go out there you have a 50%
chance to win.
"Since we're No.1 and No.2 it means we must be doing something right.
It's unfortunate to lose in a Grand Slam, but we just need to move forward."
Next up for Hantuchova will be No.13 seed and former French Open champion
Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Canadian No.1 Rebecca Marino earlier in the day,
60 64. Kuznetsova leads Hantuchova in their head-to-head series, 7-4,
including a 2-0 record on clay. This will be their first meeting in two years.
