Auburn Hills, Mich. — The scene on the court at Oakland University
looked like the first day of training camp for the Hawks.
Players and coaches hugging and greeting each other like they were
returning from summer break.
moments of the season, Wednesday's 114-110 upset of the
Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center, their first road win
over a Western Conference foe in 24 tries.
But everyone scattered after that Lakers game, some of them
staying in Los Angeles, others heading to Houston for All-Star
Weekend or shuttling off to parts unknown to get away from
the grind and pressure of the season.
"It's good to be back and this is what we do. These guys are
closer than anybody can ever imagine," Hawks coach Mike Woodson
said. "And that's nice to see. Because this thing goes by so
quickly, a season, a career. So you have to make sure and not
waste a second."
A little help
The Hawks aided and abetted, unknowingly, in Nate Robinson's
slam-dunk competition win Saturday night.
Last week while the team was in Los Angeles, someone from the
NBA office called asking for a Spud Webb jersey but didn't tell
the Hawks why they wanted it. That same jersey showed up Saturday
night in Houston, where Robinson used it as his contest-clinching
prop. Webb wore it as Robinson soared over him for his best dunk
of the night.
'Here's my 'H' chord...'
Hawks rookie Esteban Batista received a guitar as a gift from
the folks at NBA International for his work with them during
All-Star Weekend.
The only problem: Batista doesn't play. So he's been told by
his veteran teammates that he has to learn how to play a tune
by the end of the week or pay a fine.
"I don't think he's going to make it," Hawks co-captain Al
Harrington said with a smile. "So he might as well get his
checkbook out now."
Lue back in two?
Hawks reserve point guard Tyronn Lue has missed the past
two weeks with a sprained right knee ligament is on schedule
to return in two weeks, provided his rehab continues without
a setback.
Lue, who was in Houston over the weekend for the All-Star
festivities, said he feels much better than he did in the
days immediately following the injury.
"I'm not doing anything physical right now," Lue said from
the sideline at Monday's practice at Oakland University.
"It's coming along right, though. I'm confident I'll be back
on schedule."
