Delk puzzled by inactivity

Chicago — Tony Delk celebrated his 32nd birthday Saturday but
he'll have to wait a while to see if his birthday wish comes
true. After sitting on the Hawks' bench all season without an
injury, the veteran guard's 10th NBA season has turned out to
be his most perplexing. He's healthy and more than capable of
contributing, but hasn't touched the floor for a single minute
of game action during the regular season.
"I'm ready to be moved," he said from his seat in the visiting
team's locker room at the United Center. "I want to be given an
opportunity like everybody else in this league, to play when I'm
healthy."
Delk was placed on the inactive list at the start of the season
with a phantom heel injury. But he said he's never felt better.
And he's been a demon in practice, working with the second team
and giving the starters fits. He said no one has ever given him
an explanation as to why he's not being used, though the Hawks
have made no secret of their intention to trade him.
But in a contract year, inactivity is almost as bad as playing
poorly — because potential suitors have no idea why Delk is in
street clothes every night rather than a uniform.
"No one has told me anything," Delk said. "They can't even give
me an explanation. But I'm not trying to spend the rest of the
season on anybody's bench. There's nothing wrong with me. I feel
great. So maybe it's time for me to go somewhere else and get a
chance to play and help a team win some games."
‧ NEW LOOK BULLS: Hawks coach Mike Woodson isn't surprised that
the Bulls have experienced a few growing pains this season
without the veteran presence of Antonio Davis on the floor and
in the locker room anymore. Davis was a part of the sign-and-trade
deal that sent he and Eddy Curry to New York during the summer.
"Antonio Davis and Eddy Curry were huge for this ballclub last
year," Woodson said. "Especially Antonio because I thought he
was the glue in terms of really mentoring these young guys. Now
you don't have him or Curry and it all falls on young guys. But
they've held in there, for a young team."
The Bulls entered Saturday night's game with a three-game win
streak and in the thick of the race for the eighth and final
playoff slot in the Eastern Conference. "At 19 wins they're one
game out of the eighth spot and two games out of the seventh
spot," Woodson said. "So all is not bad for the Bulls. I would
take that position in a heartbeat when I look at our schedule
and what we've done. That's where we should be, about 19 or 20
wins at the halfway point of the season."
‧ BACK ON MONDAY: The Hawks are off today but return to action
Monday when they host the Knicks at Philips Arena.
