Rookie forward Marvin Williams had six points in 19 minutes
in Friday night's 96-94 victory over Orlando after missing
Wednesday's game at Charlotte because of a tender left Achilles
tendon. "It had been bothering me for a couple weeks and
wasn't getting any better," Williams said. "The trainer
thought I should take a couple days off, and it helped." Coach
Mike Woodson said he didn't know if Williams would be available
until he warmed up. Williams' only basket in five attempts was
a dunk. He had three rebounds.
‧ NO ALL-STAR HYPE: Woodson was upset when no Hawks were named
to the Rookie Challenge, but he is realistic about the chances
of Joe Johnson or Al Harrington being named next week to the
All-Star Game as Eastern Conference reserves. "If we were a
.500 team, I think Joe or Al would have a good chance to make
it," Woodson said. "But a lot of it is based on how your team
is doing."
HILL GETTING CLOSE: Although he didn't play against the Hawks,
Grant Hill says he is close to returning to the Orlando lineup.
The forward finished fifth in the Eastern Conference voting for
the All-Star Game despite having played in only 11 games because
of a pelvic injury. Hill, averaging 16.8 points per game, had
surgery early this season and then had a setback, not playing
since Jan. 15.
LONG TIME NO SEE: Although they are Southeast Division rivals,
the Hawks and Magic hadn't played during the regular season
before Friday. The remaining three games will be played over
a 22-day period from March 19 to April 10. The only teams that
the Hawks still haven't played are Minnesota, Sacramento and
Seattle. The Hawks play the Sonics and Kings on a West Coast
trip that starts Feb. 10.
