Hawks co-captain Al Harrington does not have a knee problem. His
ankle is fine. And that nasty case of plantar fasciitis that had
been bothering him for weeks has finally subsided as well.
Internet rumors about a potential knee problem surfaced Monday
when Harrington was sent, at the request of Hawks general manager
Billy Knight, to a local doctor for an MRI on both his right knee
and ankle.
Hawks athletic trainer Wally Blase said it was simply a
routine follow up to the same test Harrington had done
this time last year when the Hawks were here.
But once word spread that Harrington was having the test
the rumors started flying about a possible knee injury.
All of which, Blase said, is nonsense.
"All we wanted to do was get another MRI to compare with
the one he got last year," Blase said. "And we had the
ankle checked out to see if there was anything there that
might be causing problems in his knee or foot. But everything
came back clean. In fact, it was better than we could have
expected."
Harrington laughed at the rumors. He said he's actually felt
refreshed lately. The pain his right foot, which he said
he could barely put weight on last week, is better since
he removed an insert in his shoes that was supposed to help
combat the pain of the plantar fasciitis.
"I'm better than ever," he said before Wednesday night's game
against the Lakers at Staples Center. "I really don't know
how that kind of [stuff] gets started, those rumors. But I'm
good baby."
SPEAKING OF RUMORS: Hawks coach Mike Woodson might find his
name circulating through the cyber rumor mill as well. His
alma mater, Indiana, could be in the market for a new coach
soon with current coach Mike Davis currently under fire from
Hoosiers fans and the media.
Woodson's name was mentioned as a candidate for the job when
Davis replaced Bob Knight six years ago. Knight was Woosdon's
coach during All-America career at IU and has long been one
of his coaching mentors.
Were Davis to be fired before the end of the season, Woodson
would be high on the list of candidates to replace him, as
would another IU alum, Iowa coach Steve Alford. But Woodson's
got a job and is under contract for two more seasons.
"I'm trying to turn this program around, the Hawks are my
priority," Woodson said. "I didn't make a one- or two-year
commitment. I made a four-year commitment to help turn this
team into a playoff outfit. And that's where all my energy is
focused right now."
MEET YOU IN DETROIT: The Hawks were to scatter this morning
for the short break that is All-Star weekend. Several players
and coaches stayed in Los Angeles while most headed elsewhere
for the weekend.
Josh Smith, Royal Ivey and Esteban Batista will all be in
Houston for the All-Star festivities — Smith as a participant
in the dunk contest, Ivey as his accomplice and Batista on
loan to NBA International to moonlight as a correspondent.
They will also be joined by Hawks in-arena announcer Rashan
Ali, who will handle similar duties during Sunday's All-Star
Game at Toyota Center, while also assisting with other events
throughout the weekend.
An Atlanta-native, Ali, has been a staple on radio and
television in her hometown, and is currently a part of "The
A-Team Morning Show" on HOT 107.9 FM.
The Hawks resume action after the weekend in Detroit on Monday,
where they will gather for practice before Tuesday's game
against the Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
