Indianapolis - Joe Johnson showed why the Hawks decided to shower him
with dollar bills.
Johnson earned some his cash on Friday night, when he tossed the entire
squad on his back and carried them to 117-112 overtime victory over the
Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Johnson, who finished with 40 points, drained a 3-pointer to
force overtime and scored 11 straight points to will the Hawks
to victory on an assortment of drives and deep jumpers.
"He was phenomenal," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "He was
huge."
Johnson also had 13 assists, while making 16-of-24 shots,
including 5-of-5 3-pointers.
"Joe took over the game," said Al Harrington, who had 22 points
and nine rebounds before fouling out. "It was his night. He
couldn't miss and we just had to keep feeding him."
With the Hawks down 104-101, Marvin Williams missed a 3-pointer
and Zaza Pachulia got the rebound and tossed it back outside to
Marvin Williams. He swung the ball to Johnson for the tying shot.
Time and again this season, the Hawks have melted down the
stretch. This time Johnson wouldn't let them fold.
"Going into overtime, I didn't want to start playing from
behind," Johnson said. "I didn't want them to jump on us. I
tried to come out with some intensity and jump on them before
they jumped on us."
Johnson scored the Hawks first three baskets of overtime.
"Our record don't say a lot, but we still fight hard," Johnson
said. "We've been fighting to win a close game like this,
against a great team like the Indiana Pacers. We can take a lot
from this and build on this."
The Pacers didn't go away quietly and had a chance to win. With
the Hawks leading 113-112, Anthony Johnson missed a 3-pointer.
Wayne Granger got the rebound, but missed the stick-back and
Royal Ivey got the rebound.
"We had to get that rebound," Johnson said. "It was ugly out
there."
It was the Hawks third win over the Pacers this season.
With Harrington scoring 17 points, the Hawks defeated the Pacers
87-85 on Nov. 25 and Johnson led the way to a 104-94 on Jan. 23
with 28 points.
"I won't say that we dominate them," Harrington said. "Dominate
is not a good word. We've just been fortunate enough to win
because we've just out-executed them and got the stops when we
had to."
The Hawks went into the All-Star break with a promising victory
over the Los Angeles Lakers, but have found things tougher in
their return, dropping two games before this thrilling win.
Josh Childress kept up hot shooting this month. He made 7-of-14
shots as he finished with 18 points, 11 rounds and one block shot.
"We've been growing game by game, practice by practice," Woodson
said. "This group of guys come to work everyday and it was a nice
carryover into the ball game.
"We've lost a lot of close games. Our record doesn't really
indicate how well we've played this year. Nobody has really
blown us out. We've been in a lot of ball games."
Harrington got the Hawks off to a good start, making his first
two shots on his old home court. The Hawks controlled most of
the first quarter, gave up a lead in the second, before battling
back for a 47-47 halftime score.
The Hawks led 27-22 after the first period.
The Pacers seemed to pick up some momentum after guard Fred
Jones dribbled in from the wing and threw down a thunderous
dunk. He poster-ized backup center Esteban Batista in the process.
