Unfortunately for the Hawks, the NBA no longer allows only man-to-man
defense.
Once the Milwaukee Bucks settled back into a zone, the Hawks' offense
went from awesome to awful Saturday night at Philips Arena.
"I would have never have thought a zone would beat us,"
Hawks coach Mike Woodson said after the 99-89 defeat. "But
we just didn't make any shots.
"If I was another team, I'd watch this game and probably play
a zone against us, too."
Repeatedly breaking Milwaukee's early press, the Hawks hit
10 of their first 13 shots and 16 of their first 25. But up
by 14 points midway through the second quarter, the Hawks went
icy cold to the dismay of a crowd of 15,729.
Left to shoot over the Bucks' zone, the Hawks made just two of
their last 14 attempts from behind the arc and couldn't overcome
the cold shooting of Joe Johnson (4 of 15) and Josh Smith (4 of 14).
The Bucks weren't red-hot either, but they pounded the Hawks on
the offensive boards and got 28 second-chance points to 14 for
Atlanta.
"We got off to a great start, and we got lackadaisical and the
zone caught us," Woodson said. "We've just got to go back to the
drawing board."
Asked if Milwaukee normally played much zone, Bucks coach Terry
Stotts empathically said, "No." But they apparently didn't need
much practice to befuddle the Hawks.
"Atlanta is a tough matchup team," said the former Hawks coach,
in his first year coaching Milwaukee. "We weren't stopping them
at all."
Until the Bucks switched defenses, that is. "We played zone the
whole second half," Stotts said.
Trying to build on Friday night's overtime victory at Indiana,
the Hawks led 30-22 after the first quarter and 43-29 midway
through the second. But Milwaukee cut the margin to 51-46 at
halftime, slipped ahead briefly near the end of the third period,
then pulled away in the fourth to snap a four-game losing streak.
The Hawks had won six of their past 11 games, but their lack of
depth caught up with them against the Bucks.
Both teams were coming off overtime games the night before, but
the Hawks dressed just nine players and used just eight.
"I think the fatigue caught us," Woodson said.
Al Harrington led the Hawks with 22 points, but was just 1-for-5
from behind the arc. Johnson, who had tied his career high with
40 points at Indiana, was held to 12 points and was 2-for-7 on
3-pointers.
Michael Redd led the Bucks with 21 points, while Joe Smith had
10 rebounds to go with 16 points off the bench. Dan Gadzuric
added 11 rebounds and 13 points as the Milwaukee bench outscored
Atlanta's 45-23.
The Hawks were beaten on the boards 46-36, with Milwaukee getting
17 offensive rebounds. Smith was the Hawks' only double-figure
rebounder with 11.
"They wore us down and killed us on the glass in the second
half," Smith said. "Their bench was huge."
"It's disappointing to not follow up last night's performance
with another win and get on a bit of a streak," Hawks forward
Marvin Williams said. "It's tough because we were in a good flow
in the first half. But then their defense got us out of what we
were doing."
"We were on a four-game losing streak and we needed to stop the
bleeding," Redd said. "Fortunately, we did that."
