Suspension ends with Nets in town

The Hawks are well under the NBA roster limit, but at least they will
have 10 players rather than just nine in uniform tonight when they play
the New Jersey Nets at Philips Arena.
Rookie guard Salim Stoudamire, averaging 9.6 points in 19.9 minutes per
game, is returning after serving a two-game suspension without pay for
conduct detrimental to the team.
Meanwhile, the Nets likely will be without leading scorer Vince
Carter against the Hawks. Carter, averaging 24.1 points, tweaked
a hamstring late in the first quarter of New Jersey's 101-91 home
loss to Indiana on Sunday.
Hawks coach Mike Woodson wouldn't comment on the specific reasons
for Stoudamire's suspension, calling it an "internal team matter."
But the disciplinary action is believed to stem from the former
University of Arizona standout's behavior after being pulled from
games. He served a one-game suspension in January.
"Salim will be back on Monday," Woodson said after Saturday
night's 99-89 home loss to Milwaukee. The Hawks didn't practice
Sunday.
Even with the loss to the Bucks, the Hawks are 6-6 in their past
12 games and 3-2 at home in February.
Coming off an overtime victory at Indiana on Friday night, the
Hawks started red-hot against Milwaukee but wilted in the second
half against the Bucks' zone defense.
After tying his career high with 40 points against the Pacers,
Joe Johnson appeared not to have his legs in the late going
against Milwaukee. He scored 12 points, going 4-for-15 overall
and 2-for-7 on 3-point attempts.
With Stoudamire back, Johnson will get some relief. Forced to
play more than half of each game at the point, Johnson logged
43 minutes against Milwaukee after 47 minutes against Indiana.
Even with Stoudamire's return, the Hawks still are short-handed
at the point. Tyronn Lue is sidelined with a knee injury, and
Tony Delk was placed on waivers Friday. That leaves starter Royal
Ivey as the only true point guard, but the Hawks want Stoudamire
to get as many minutes as possible.
Woodson said that the talk likely will be about adding a big man
when he and general manager Billy Knight sit down to discuss
the roster. John Edwards is the forgotten man on the depleted
Atlanta bench.
The Hawks can't recall swingman Donta Smith from the NBA
Developmental League because he is out with a knee injury.
The Hawks (17-37) used just eight players against Indiana and
Milwaukee, completing a stretch of four games in five days after
the break for the All-Star Game.
The Nets (31-24) lead the Atlantic Division by four games over
Philadelphia. In their only previous meeting, the Hawks fell
99-91 at New Jersey on Dec. 30. The teams play again March 31
in Atlanta and April 4 in New Jersey.
