Hawks forward Josh Childress admits to having an extremely high
tolerance for pain, so much so that he seriously considered
playing in Saturday night's game against the Miami Heat at
AmericanAirlines Arena. His swollen left ankle, however, would
not allow it. "This thing really was hurting," said Childress,
who suffered the injury in Friday night's loss to Sacramento when
Hawks co-captain Al Harrington fell on him. "I thought about it
[playing] but it was still sore and swollen when I woke up
[Saturday morning]." Saturday night's miss ends a streak of 74
games played for Childress, who played in 80 of 82 games during
his rookie season and the first 57 of this season. Hawks coach
Mike Woodson said Childress would be evaluated daily until the
Hawks resume game action Tuesday against Golden State at Philips
Arena.
‧ LUE UPDATE: Veteran Hawks point guard Tyronn Lue has spent the
past four weeks recovering from a sprained ligament in his knee.
But he's nearing a return, at least to practice. Lue's optimistic
self-prognosis is that he'll finally get back to running and
practicing Monday with a target date to play sometime in the
following week, perhaps the March 13 and 15 games in Milwaukee
and New York, respectively. "Until I start back to work on the
floor I can't really say for sure when I'll be back," Lue said
Saturday night. "I don't want to lie and say one thing and then
it doesn't happen. But I'm anxious to get back out there."
Woodson, however, said he's going to be a bit more cautious. "I
don't want him rushing back and taking any chances," he said.
"We need him to heal up and then worry about coming back."
‧ NO WADE: The Hawks faced the Heat without All-Star guard
Dwyane Wade, who was on the inactive list Saturday with a sore
right wrist. James Posey moved over from small forward to
shooting guard to replace Wade, and provide a defensive presence
on Hawks guard and co-captain Joe Johnson. Former Hawks forward
Antoine Walker was inserted into the starting lineup to fill the
void for the Heat.
‧ CANDIDATE DREW? Missouri coaching legend Norm Stewart is
endorsing two of his former players, including Hawks assistant
Larry Drew, as possible replacements for Quin Snyder at Missouri.
A CBS Sportsline columnist asked Stewart about the school's
upcoming coaching search and he mentioned both Drew and Central
Missouri State coach Kim Anderson. "I always thought if you could
grow your own, that's the first place you should look," Stewart
told Sportsline. "If there's someone we have raised — and there
is — I'd see that person right now as being able to unite the
fan base again, and also doing a good coaching job. . . . I don't
know if Larry's interested in the job, but he'd be someone I'd
like to see considered."
