Donta Smith's NBDL tenure was a "learning experience" he said he'll never
forget. From the travel to the game-day atmosphere, there are few
similarities to the development league and the real league. But Smith is
no longer smarting from his assignment there, which began Dec. 2 and ended
Tuesday night, when returned to his spot in the Hawks' locker room before
the Hawks played Golden State. "It's good to be back," Smith said. "We've
got what 24 games left, so you want to come in and do whatever you can to
make sure the team keeps rolling like we have been."
Smith averaged over 14 points per game during his stint with the Arkansas
RimRockers, despite missing nearly three weeks with a sprained knee. Hawks
coach Mike Woodson didn't hesitate to insert Smith back into the action at
Tuesday's shootaround practice. Smith was just glad to be back around
familiar faces and in a familiar place.
The second-year forward had developed a tight bond with the other members
of the Hawks' sophomore class — Josh Smith, Josh Childress and Royal Ivey.
"These are my guys," Smith said. "All of these guys. Watching them from afar
was tough. But I was glad to see them playing so well. And if you're a
competitor, like me, you want to be there with them helping turn this thing
around."
EDWARDS AND CHILDRESS OUT: Reserve center John Edwards sat out Tuesday
night's game with a sprained ankle, keeping him from following up Saturday's
four-point, four-rebound performance against Miami. Edwards sprained his
right ankle while working out Sunday, an off day. He could return as early
as Saturday. Josh Childress missed his second straight game with a sprained
left ankle.
CEREMONIOUSLY SPEAKING: Hawks coach Mike Woodson presented Joe Johnson with
his Team USA jersey in a brief ceremony before tip off Tuesday night.
UP WITH THE TIMES: Woodson was giddy before Tuesday's game with the arrival
of his new iPod. "It's got about 3,000 oldies but goodies on there," a
smiling Woodson said. "Thanks to my buddy LaSalle Thompson out in Sacramento."
NIGHT OF JAZZ ON TAP: The Hawks' annual charity fundraiser, "A Night of Jazz"
is set for March 24 at the Foundry at Puritan Mill. The evening features a
performance by award-winning recording artist Mike Philips. Visit Hawks.com
or call (404) 878-3250 for ticket information.
