The best part of Saturday night for former Georgia Tech center
Luke Schenscher wasn't just his Chicago Bulls leaving Philips
Arena with a win over the Hawks.
It was the faces in the crowd, particularly his former teammates
and coaches from Tech, that made his first game back in town as
a pro the special night it turned out to be.
Forget for a minute that the 7-foot-1 rookie from Australia never
took off his warmup, the first time since joining the team on a
10-day contract Sunday that he didn't play.
Just remember that many of his fondest memories as a basketball
player came while he was playing in this city. And that would
explain the mile-wide grin he had on his face as he headed for
the Bulls' team bus after their 95-90 win.
"It's great, you know, seeing coaches and friends from Georgia
Tech," Schenscher, who has spent most of first pro season with
the NBDL franchise in Fort Worth, Texas, said of his whirlwind
ride as an NBA player. "It's really good. Being down in the
D-League is hard work, just like this, so it's great to be here
now, enjoying the time here in the NBA.
"This is so much different from the D-League; everything is
different. I'm working as hard as I can and trying to enjoy the
experience as best I can."
Whether Schenscher remains with the Bulls beyond the end of his
10-day contract won't be known for at least a few more days.
But if his early returns are any indication — he scored four
points on 2-for-2 shooting and grabbed a rebound in 12 minutes
and 19 seconds during his debut against Cleveland last Sunday —
he could stick around for a while.
"There's always a market for guys his size," Hawks coach Mike
Woodson said before Saturday night's game. "There aren't many
good bigs around, so if a team has a guy they think can develop
into something, they're going to hold on to him."
