Philadelphia — Salim Stoudamire's rookie season is probably
over. The Hawks guard could miss the remainder of the season
with a sprained right elbow, Hawks coach Mike Woodson said after
his team's Wednesday morning practice.
"It looks like he's done," Woodson said after Hawks athletic
trainer Wally Blase informed him that an MRI showed a significant
sprain to Stoudamire's ulnar collateral ligament. "It's a tough
blow for him and for us, because for the most part he had a really
solid rookie season."
Stoudamire suffered the injury late in the third quarter of
Sunday's win over Orlando at Philips Arena when he was sandwiched
between two Magic players trying to get through a pick. A team
physician has recommended a second opinion, likely to be Birmingham
orthopedic specialist James Andrews, to determine if surgery will
be needed, in addition to other treatment.
His injury leaves the Hawks, already thin in the backcourt, with
just two players — starters Joe Johnson and Royal Ivey —
available for tonight's game against Philadelphia.
Backup point guard Tyronn Lue has been out with a sprained knee
since last month.
"I think Lue is talking about coming back and still have to
monitor his minutes," Woodson said. "We'll see just have to see
what happens from here."
The Hawks could add another guard from the NBDL or CBA, Woodson
said. Training camp invitee Anthony Grundy, one of the last
players cut before the start of the regular season, is averging
23.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists with the Roanoke Dazzle
of the NBDL.
But replacing Stoudamire, one of the league's top rookie scorers
at 9.7 points per game, won't be easy.
"We can't take any chances with him this late in the season,"
Woodson said. "So his focus will have to be on the summer and
getting better and taking what he's learned this season and
improving his game."
The 31st pick in last June's draft, Stoudamire played 20.3
minutes a night in 61 games off the Hawks' bench this season.
He scored a season-high 30 points in a Nov. 18 loss to the
Hornets in Oklahoma City.
Williams returns: Fellow rookie Marvin Williams rejoined the
team after missing Monday's game in Detroit while visiting his
ailing grandfather in North Carolina.
