Turning it over, early and often

Philadelphia — Much of the Hawks' success this season has come
playing through co-captains Joe Johnson and Al Harrington.
With the ball in their hands late in games the Hawks have been
able to slay some of the league's elite teams and compete with
the rest most nights.
But with the ball in their hands early Wednesday night it was
Johnson and Harrington that combined for 11 of the Hawks' 19
turnovers as they were blitzed early and later buried 115-106
by the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wachovia Center.
"When your best two players turn the ball over 11 times it makes
it tough," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "It's been a long time
since our best two players are sitting on the bench at the end of
a game because basically it's a no-show."
Johnson had all six of his turnovers in the first quarter, when the
Hawks (21-45) trailed by 14. They trailed by as many as 24 before
mounting a late comeback. But Johnson and Harrington were already
on the bench by then, watching as their younger teammates tried to
recover from the mess made earlier.
"A lot of that has to be on me," said Johnson, who played just 32
minutes and finished with 12 points and eight assists to go along
with his six turnovers. "It was like we went back to some of the
struggles we had early in the season with the turnovers. We weren't
able to get into any kind of rhythm early and that's on me to make
sure we do.
"But you have these kinds of nights, those times when it seems like
everything you do goes wrong."
For everything the Hawks did wrong, the 76ers countered with something
right.
Losers of four straight games coming in, they were bolstered by the
return of superstar guard Allen Iverson, who missed all four of those
losses with a sore right foot.
Iverson led the way with a game-high 29 points and got plenty of help
from Chris Webber (21 points and 10 rebounds) and Andre Iguodala (17
points, 12 rebounds).
The 76ers rattled off a season-high 67 first-half points and cruised
in the second half as Kyle Korver heated up off the bench, he was
7-for-7 from the floor at one point and finished with 23 points on
8-for-11 shooting, 6-for-7 from beyond the 3-point line.
"Korver hasn't shot it like that against us all year," said Harrington,
who ended his night with just 12 points, four assists and three rebounds.
"But we just had a terrible start. And unfortunately we weren't able to
recover like we're used to. And I think that's because of all the turnovers
we had early."
The Hawks youngsters did close the gap late. With Josh Smith (team-high 22
points), Josh Childress (17 and 12 rebounds), Marvin Williams (21 on 8-for-12
shooting), Royal Ivey (12) and Esteban Batista on the floor, they trimmed a
21-point lead with five minutes to play to just nine with 55 seconds to play.
But that was as close as they would get.
"When we turned it over early we were still in the game," Woodson said.
"It just caught up with us. We could never recover from that."
