Anthony Grundy wasn't sure if it would even happen, his return
to the NBA this season. In the meantime he was content to dominate
the competition in the NBDL. Still, when he joined the Hawks on a
10-day contract Monday, it was a relief of sorts.
"I was just lucky I had good, positive people around me who
reminded me every single day that I have to continue to persevere
and stay in control of the things you can control and not worry
about anything else," said Grundy, who spent training camp with
the Hawks before being released just days before the regular-season
opener. "When it doesn't happen for you [being called up], you do
start to wonder a little bit. But for me it was just a matter of
staying mentally tough and not getting discouraged. We had a
saying in the D-League that just because someone else goes up to
the NBA, it doesn't mean you're not doing good things. It just
means there was a specific need that a team needed filled. And I
think that's what's happened for me with the Hawks."
Hawks coach Mike Woodson said Grundy would have to learn "on the
fly" and be ready to go, but Grundy didn't play Tuesday at Bobcats
Arena. "We've had a pretty solid rotation of about eight guys
lately because of injuries, so we'll have to see where he fits
and get him out there," Woodson said.
‧ HOOSIERS' NEW BOSS: The news Tuesday that Kelvin Sampson would
be taking over as coach at Indiana was a shock in the coaching
community, particularly since Sampson's name had never been
mentioned as a candidate prior to the story breaking Tuesday.
Woodson, an IU alum and former All-American, had publicly backed
his former IU teammate Randy Wittman, an assistant in Orlando.
"It was a surprise," Woodson said, "but all you can do is wish
[Sampson] well. I truly thought an IU guy was going to get the
job. Steve Alford maybe or Witt, and I was all for bringing Bob
Knight back. But again, all you can do is wish [Sampson well]
because at any level, coaching isn't an easy job."
‧ MILESTONE FOR JJ: Hawks guard Joe Johnson got two assists
Tuesday night to reach 1,500 for his career.
‧ LANG BACK IN LEAGUE: James Lang, released by the Hawks last
week after back-to-back 10-day contracts, signed a 10-day deal
with the Toronto Raptors on Monday.
