Second-year Hawks forward Josh Smith's post-All-Star surge
has been well documented. His play over the Hawks' past five
games — Smith is averaging 20.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.8
assists, 4.0 blocks and 1.4 steals — has truly been an
eye-opener.
Wizards All-Star forward Antawn Jamison raved about Smith after
he played a huge role in helping the Hawks snap an eight-game
losing streak to the Wizards on Friday night.
"He was phenomenal," Jamison said. "He ran the floor, did a good
job of contesting shots on defense. When he's stroking the ball
the way he's stroking it, you see why the Hawks are really high
on him. He's a factor now, but he'll really be a factor when he
learns the game a little bit better. He's going to be one of
those guys you don't really want to face on a night-in, night-out
basis."
NO KG OR RICKY: The Timberwolves, losers of three consecutive
games before Sunday's game, played without leading scorers Kevin
Garnett (knee) and Ricky Davis (groin).
500 AND COUNTING: Hawks co-captain Joe Johnson dished out a
team-high seven assists Friday and entered Sunday's game with
500 this season. He's the eighth player in franchise history to
reach the 500 mark in a season. Doc Rivers and Mookie Blaylock
did it three times each, Walt Hazzard twice and Lenny Wilkens,
Jason Terry, Eddie Johnson and Pete Maravich once.
