Two days from now no one will remember that the Hawks had to
survive the Miami Heat's second and third strings to get it.
No one will care that the Heat played without Shaquille O'Neal,
Dwyane Wade, Gary Payton and Alonzo Mourning and without Pat
Riley on the sideline. The only thing that will matter is that
the Hawks got win No. 26, doubling their win total from a year
ago, with a 103-100 win over the Heat before a sellout crowd of
19,718 at Philips Arena.
Tyronn Lue's 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 8.3 seconds
to play was the difference. After a timeout the Heat managed an
off-balance
18-footer from Dorrell Wright that wouldn't have mattered even
if he'd made the shot.
"That was the perfect way to end the season in Atlanta," Hawks
forward Josh Childress said. "Hopefully, we can finish this
thing off with three in a row in Cleveland [Wednesday night] and
finish this season off on a positive note and head into next
season on the same vibe."
The Hawks' vibe was horrible early. They trailed by 13 points
before regaining their composure and taking a nine-point lead,
89-80, with 8:26 to play. But the Heat reserves battled right
back, finally tying the game at 100-100 on a Wayne Simien free
throw with 37.2 seconds to play.
Lue missed the Hawks' first attempt at a game-winner with 25
seconds to play. Zaza Pachulia got the rebound and passed the
ball to Joe Johnson, who found Lue at the top of the arc. The
Hawks' reserve point guard finished things off with his third
3-pointer of the night and a few choice words for his buddies —
O'Neal and Antoine Walker — on the Heat bench.
"I was talking stuff to Shaq and Antoine," Lue said. "They were
giving me stuff before Joe penetrated and kicked it to me. I just
had a couple of words to say, but I can't repeat any of them.
"But the best thing is when you win at home and are able to thank
the fans for supporting us all this year."
Lue was one of six Hawks in double figures with 15 points.
Pachulia led the charge with 18 points and eight rebounds. Al
Harrington added 17, Marvin Williams 16 (and a game-high nine
rebounds off the bench), Johnson 15 and Childress 10 (off the
bench).
"Their individual improvement and team improvement has made them
a team that is not easy to beat," said Heat assistant coach Ron
Rothstein, who filled in for Riley while the head coach went to
New York to be by the side of his ailing 96-year-old mother.
The Hawks' offensive balance offset big nights from seldom-used
Heat youngsters Wright (19 points, seven rebounds) and Jason
Kapono (16 and six assists).
"My mindset is: It's basketball," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said.
"It doesn't matter who we play, it's pretty much how you play and
doing the right things that are necessary to win basketball games.
And we've been doing that. All year we've been putting ourselves
in a position to win basketball games."
"Tonight was another nail-biter, but we made the play. Lue hit
the big shot down the stretch."
