While the Hawks 13-game improvement from last season to this one
shows signs of marked improvement, it's not nearly enough for
Hawks coach Mike Woodson. "It's great that we doubled our win
total from last season. But the ultimate goal for me when I took
this job was to get to the playoffs," Woodson said. "I'm excited
about the way our young guys are starting to grow, and play
basketball for these Atlanta Hawks fans. But the next step is
to get to the playoffs. And I'm only here for that reason and
that reason only."
NO LEBRON OR LARRY: Cleveland played without its top two players
in the Hawks' season finale Wednesday night at Quicken Loans
Arena. Both LeBron James and Larry Hughes sat out the game, no
doubt resting up for the Cavs' playoff series. The Hawks played
without starting point guard Royal Ivey, who left Tuesday night's
game against Miami suffering from bronchitis.
JOSH SMITH REPORTING: Josh Smith will be one of four NBA players
working as a guest reporter for NBA TV during the playoffs. He'll
join Toronto's Chris Bosh and Mike James and Charlotte's Brevin
Knight as NBA TV correspondents. All four will be assigned to
different playoff cities during this weekend's first round to
provide analysis of the teams and one-on-one interviews with
players and coaches.
‧ SPEAKING OF SMITH: Like most everyone else, Smith's former
teammate, Antoine Walker, has noticed the dramatic change in
Smith's game from his rookie season to the end of his second
season. "I think he's more comfortable on the floor," Walker
said after starting against his former team Tuesday night when
the Hawks beat the Heat. "I think he's almost ready to take off.
I think the last 10 games or so he's shown he can be a scorer and
a rebounder, and he blocks shots, too. His athleticism is
unbelievable. He's going to be one of the most exciting players
in this league. And when you have the games he's had the last 10,
it kind of carries over into next season."
