Marvin Williams had his summer study and workout regimen
interrupted Thursday by a spot of good news.
The Hawks rookie was named to the NBA's All-Rookie second team,
following teammates Josh Childress and Josh Smith who received
those accolades following their first seasons.
Williams, who will spend the bulk of his offseason back on campus
at North Carolina for the summer, was thrilled to learn he had
been honored for his hard work during a trying first season in
the league that saw him struggle early.
"It is definitely an accomplishment I'm proud to receive, and
it's quite a blessing," he said through a statement released by
the Hawks. "I think it is safe to say I got off to a slow start,
but I feel I progressed and improved my game with the help of my
teammates and coaches. I would like to thank those who considered
me for this honor, and it certainly gives me the incentive to
continue to work hard this summer and improve my skills as me
and my teammates get ready for 2006-07."
Williams finished the season with modest numbers — 8.5 points,
4.8 rebounds and 24.7 minutes per game while shooting 44.3
percent from the floor and 75 percent from the free-throw line
while appearing in 78 of a possible 82 games — but ranked among
the top 10 rookies in points, rebounds, field goal shooting and
minutes played.
Unanimous Rookie of the Year winner Chris Paul (New
Orleans/Oklahoma City), Charlie Villanueva (Toronto), Andrew
Bogut (Milwaukee), Deron Williams (Utah) and Channing Frye (New
York) comprised the first team.
Danny Granger (Indiana), Raymond Felton (Charlotte), Luther Head
(Houston) and Ryan Gomes (Boston) joined Williams on the second
team.
Williams saw his numbers rise month by month in nearly every
category. And in seven starting assignments the 6-foot-9,
235-pound forward averaged 9.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.4
assists.
"Marvin worked hard over the course of the year, improving month
after month and his hard work was noticed by those who voted,"
Hawks coach Mike Woodson said in a statement. "He was a good,
young professional who started to figure out the NBA game and
he will only get better. I'm very proud of what he was able to
accomplish and I'm sure he will continue to improve his game
this summer as he returns for his second year."
