Indianapolis — If the Hawks are serious about making a late push for the
playoffs, and as of this moment their sincerity is in doubt, they'll have
to give a better showing than they did Saturday night.
The Indiana Pacers didn't even bother sparring with the Hawks before tearing
them to pieces during a 113-90 loss/St. Patrick's Day massacre at Conseco Fieldhouse.
The Pacers snapped their losing streak at 11 games, their longest since a
12-game slide in 1989, and pushed the Hawks' skid to two straight.
After winning four straight home games without leading scorer Joe Johnson,
who remains sidelined with a bruised right calf, the Hawks have been run off
the floor by both Boston and Indianapolis on the road. Both the Celtics and
Pacers have losing records.
"It definitely got to our heads," Hawks reserve guard Salim Stoudamire said
after Saturday's disastrous performance. "Before the Boston game there was
all this talk about Atlanta making a run at the playoffs. And as soon as that
was on the airwaves, we came out and stunk it up."
That's the PG-13 description of what the Hawks did Saturday. The Pacers were
up 15 points before the Hawks worked up a lather, and by the time they really
buckled down and started to play, the Pacers' lead had grown to a comfortable
25 points.
Hawks coach Mike Woodson warned his team that the Pacers would play with a
sense of urgency. His warnings couldn't fix the Hawks' porous defense, though.
Woodson mentioned Josh Smith, Josh Childress and Marvin Williams by name when
citing the Hawks' lackadaisical defensive effort. Their Pacers counterparts
— Troy Murphy, Mike Dunleavy and Danny Granger — combined for 62 points,
13 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and three steals.
"We struggled from beginning to end," Woodson said. "But I thought our three
young guys were awful tonight, especially defensively. I can't take anything
away from Murphy, Dunleavy and Granger because they played well. But we were
just so non-competitive at those positions. And it's unacceptable. You can't
come out and play like that.
"If you're struggling to score points, you better make sure they're struggling
to score. But they were shooting 60 percent [62.5] at the half. And you're not
going to beat any teams in this league without a defensive presence. We were
awful tonight defensively, and that's on me."
Childress admitted it would be hard to argue with Woodson's harsh assessment,
which was highlighted during his halftime speech and finalized after the game.
Childress
"All the guys we guarded were above their averages," said Childress, who finished
with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. "That's not acceptable. Us three
as defenders, we're better than that. And we should take it upon ourselves to
make sure we don't give guys nights like this."
As ugly as these last two losses have been for the Hawks (26-41), they're
still confident they can correct whatever went wrong.
"This loss is not discouraging," said Smith, who led the Hawks with 16 points,
11 rebounds, five blocks and five turnovers. "It happens during the course
of a long season. But the key to winning on the road is controlling the tempo.
If you can do that, you have a pretty good chance of winning the game. We've
been able to do that lately at home, but not these last two games. "We had
two winnable games presented to us and we didn't capitalize on either one.
