Justine's second round opponent is Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, a WTA tour
veteran, Fed Cup team, and 2004 Olympic participant.
Bio
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo is currently ranked with the WTA at 99, and 76 with the
Porsche race to the yearly championships. Date of Birth November 7, 1977.
Height 5'7 1/2'' (1.71 m), Weight 130 lbs. (59 kg) and plays right-handed
(two-handed both sides). She has 1 WTA title. Her best season was 2003-2004,
and was regularly in Tier II events. Her best tournaments were round of 64 at
Tier II's and Tier I's in those two years. Sanchez Lorenzo is a familiar face
to Spanish tennis fans with her good looks, and personality. She has been a
part of the Spanish Fed Cup squad for many years. Her highest WTA ranking was
33 in April 5, 2004. Sanchez Lorenzo is mainly seen in the Tier III and IV
tournaments nowadays. Solid, but lacking a big serve, or a unique arsenal of
shots; her game is based on consistency. There has been good results on clay
in the Tier III events years ago, and grass courts too due to her good
movement, low to the ground shots ,and sliced two-handed backhanders on both
sides. Sanchez Lorenzo has simply been over powered by the harder pace, and
bigger hitting of younger players recently with her lighter body frame. There
was a very big moment for the Spaniard in knocking out the slumping defending
Roland Garros champion Anastasia Myskina back in May at round one. This
infamous win is the best of her career.
Head to head against Justine
Justine has played Maria Sanchez Lorenzo twice, and defeated her both times.
Once on grass in the Netherlands in 2003 at the Ordina Open 6-4 6-3, and in
2000 during the qualifying round at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on indoor
hardcourt 6-3 7-5 in Germany.
US OPEN History
Sanchez Lorenzo's best US Open was in 2003; she made the 3rd round. Last year
she was over in the 1st round. The Spaniard didn't play in the 2001 or 2002
editions. The years before that 1996- 1998 resulted in 1st round exits.
1999-2000 was a bit better, and appearances were made to the 2nd round.
2005 WTA Hardcourt matches
The Spaniard started out at Canberra in Australia, and made it to the round
of 32. She then entered the Australian Open losing to Anna Smashnova in the
first round 6-4 6-0 6-0. She played the Tier I events Indian Wells, and
Miami, but defeated in round of 64 to Fabiola Zuluaga 6-2 7-5, and Flavia
Pennetta 6-3 6-3 respectively. Her summer hardcourt tournaments were a Tier
IV Stockholm; where she lost to a qualifier Emma Laine in the round of 32.
Sanchez Lorenzo made the main draw in Toronto at the Rogers Cup, but was
defeated in the round of 32 by again Flavia Pennetta of Italy 6-4 7-5. The
final warm up event the Spaniard entered was the Pilot Pen in New Haven. She
lost in the qualifying round of 32 to young American Jamea Jackson 7-6(7-4)
6-4.
