Justine Henin-Hardenne is the No. 7 ranked player in the world and her second
round opponent, Maria Sanchez Lorenzo is ranked 99th and unseeded at the US
Open. However, Sanchez Lorenzo put up a good fight in her second round match
against Henin-Hardenne before succumbing, 6-3, 6-4 on a gorgeous, sunny day
at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It was a match-up of different forehand and backhand styles, with Sanchez
Lorenzo using both hands for each and Henin-Hardenne relying on just one for
both.
The first set started with the players trading service breaks, with Sanchez
Lorenzo breaking Henin-Hardenne first as the Belgian struggled with her
serve, double faulting to give the Spaniard the game. It set the tone for the
match as both players would struggle with their first serves throughout the
match. Henin-Hardenne converted just 53 percent of her first serves and
Sanchez Lorenzo just 60 percent.
She knows she needs to get her serve right again because it is key for her
winning points.
"I did serve a couple of double?faults," she said of her eight double faults
in the match. "But we could see that when my first serve is in, I win a lot
of points. So I need to be very focused on that, and I'm sure I'll serve
better — I hope — next match."
Henin-Hardenne, the 2003 US Open champion, rebounded to break Sanchez Lorenzo
in the second game and then held her own serve in the third with several
perfectly placed winners and drop shots. However after four games it was tied
2-2 with Henin-Hardenne struggling with her serve and Sanchez Lorenzo
matching her groundstrokes.
However, Henin-Hardenne rebounded to win the next three games as she was
better able to take advantage of openings on the court to place winners,
placing shots into the corners often from the net that Sanchez Lorenzo could
only watch. It was a big difference on the day as Henin-Hardenne nailed 27
winners to just three for Sanchez Lorenzo.
Henin-Hardenne broke Sanchez Lorenzo twice in the second set, while Sanchez
Lorenzo only managed one break for the set. The Belgian was only able to
convert 4 of 11 break point chances.
Sanchez Lorenzo held her serve to take the ninth game and trail
Henin-Hardenne by just 5-4. However, though clearly not at her sharpest in
this match, Henin-Hardenne took the tenth game for the win. She now is 3-0
vs. Sanchez Lorenzo.
Henin-Hardenne, seeking her fifth Grand Slam title, now advances to the third
round where she will face either Jeong Cho or Gisela Dulko.
