Chasing her second Pacific Life Open title in three seasons, top seed
Justine Henin-Hardenne wasted no time in powering into the fourth round
Monday, crushing Japan's Aiko Nakamura 6-0, 6-0.
The Belgian moved to 16-1 on the season, with her only loss on the season
coming against Amelie Mauresmo in the final of the Australian Open when
she retired with a stomach upset.
Looking ahead to her third match in three days with another Japanese player,
Ai Sugiyama, Henin-Hardenne said she was thankful for a speedy victory
Monday.
"The wait has been very long today," said Henin-Hardenne, who had earlier
watched grinding three-set victories by Lleyton Hewitt and Elena Dementieva
on center court.
"It's been a very long day, too. Very long matches before me. Then we have
to play three days in a row. I will have to play tomorrow. So it's good to
be quick. But in my first two matches, I've been very focused on every point
and try to save my energy for my next match. I'm very happy about that."
Despite a shocking serving performance, fourth seed Elena Dementieva rallied
from a set down to defeat rising Indian star Sania Mirza 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to
reach the fourth round. The Russian served 18 double faults, was broken eight
times and won just 38 percent of points on her second serve. She next plays
China's Na Li.
Argentine Gisela Dulko, seeded 17th, won a 2 hr., 23 min. battle with 12th
seeded Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(6).
