CHARLESTON: 40 Degrees at C
16/04/2006:
Played in 40(104 F) degrees celsius, Justine met her match against the top
spin wizard Patty Schynder at the Family Circle Cup semi-final. After an
outstanding first set, the Belgian champion lost her positioning, and was out
of firing range by the immaculately playing Swiss, natural elements of heat,
and even wind 6-2 3-6 2-6. Justine now heads to Belgium for her home coming
grand return to Fed Cup for the tie that will be played on April 22 and 23.
The weather caused an unusually hot FCC center court at Charleston on
Saturday.
Temperatures were hovering around 40(104 F) degrees, yet Justine started in
full flight in the first set. She broke Patty, and held serves well. A good
ratio of 70% first serves were played, and the first set was all going the RG
champ's way. A fired up Justine won the first set 6-2.
Instead of remaining in hot form for the second set, Justine literally burned
out as her first serves went down to 35%. Patty drew on longer designed green
clay rallies, and cleverly out positioned Justine. The second set went the
way of the Swiss 3-6.
The EHP (Extreme Heat Policy) was finally enacted, and a 10 minute break was
used before the start of the final set. Justine began a bit brighter with
serves in the 70% range, but a very dialled in top spin Patty, and windy
elements halted the Belgian 4x grand slam champion in shot making
penetration. Schynder won the final set 2-6, and will now try to win the
title after making her last final at the FCC back in 2002.
Score final: 6-2 3-6 2-6
Next mission for the world's greatest 1-handed backhand will be Fed Cup for
Belgium on April 22 and 23. We'll have all the news, stories, and information
