On another damp, chilly Paris Spring day at this year's French Open Justine
moved into round 3 by defeating impressive 19 year old rookie Belarussian
Anastasiya Yakimova. The match was a rough gritty clay court battle, but it
only makes birthday celebrations even sweeter than the icing on the cake for
Justine.
"It's like Belgium in November. The conditions were awkward today, and that
created some highs and lows in the match. The balls were very heavy at the
end so I'm happy to be in the 3rd round" - Justine
This was the first career meeting between Justine, and the 19 year old from
Belarus. The rookie is currently at #58, and can surely only go upward. It
was solid hard hitting tennis from the first point, as the Belgian champion
was confronted with Yakimova's deep Eastern European power returns. Justine
broke the 19 year old early, but edgy play incited by lack of her extreme
perfection standards continued to disrupt the Belgian super heroine. Genius
shot making, and finesse on crucial points gave Justine the first set 6-4 in
43 minutes.
The second set showed great fighting qualities from the Belarussian, as she
broke Justine's opening service game - and consolidated with a 2-0 lead. H-H
regained poise and composure toward the latter stages of the set, and at 5-5
Yakimova finally cracked from pressure as the two time Roland Garros champ
saved 3 sets points. Justine won the match holding harder, stronger, and
better as the Belarussian then had a service game to stay alive on Phillipe
Chatrier. Not a pretty present of a match on show, but 7-5 to the birthday
girl.
Final Score 6-4 7-5 in 99 minutes
