Henin-Hardenne sets up all Belgian semis By Araz Gulekjian Tuesday, June 6, 2006 Defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne overcame a shaky first set to quell the challenge of Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld on Tuesday and book a semifinal date with fellow-Belgian Kim Clijsters. The 23-year-old No5 seed crunched 20 winners and committed 19 mistakes on her way to a 7-5 6-2 triumph over her 20-year-old opponent in one hour, 26 minutes on Court Suzanne Lenglen. This is the fourth time since her debut here in 1999 that Henin-Hardenne has made it through the last four of the tournament. In the early stages of the contest, the ferocious nature of Groenefeld's groundstrokes overwhelmed Henin-Hardenne who fell behind 0-2. But the little Belgian stormed right back, building a 4-3 lead after breaking her opponent in the crucial seventh game. The defending champion dropped her serve in the next game but recovered to clinch the opener in the twelfth game after Groenefeld hit a sloppy return. The 13th ranked German spent the changeovers reading her notes but to no avail. Henin-Hardenne, a two-time champion here (2003 and 2005), stepped onto the court with more authority in the second set. She took a commanding 3-0 lead and concluded the match in the eighth game with a clean forehand winner. On Thursday, the pint-sized Belgian squares off with Clijsters, who ousted Swiss Miss Martina Hingis 7-6(5) 6-1 earlier on Tuesday.
