Justine defeated Anastasia Myskina in a thrilling final at Eastbourne 4-6 6-1
7-6(7-5) dismissing the urban tennis myth that Roland Garros champions cannot
play on grass. The finale featured superb classic grass court techniques from
both players, but the gallant Justine held stronger in the duel of nerves in
the tiebreaker. The 3x Belgian Roland Garros champion, and 2004 Russian
Roland Garros winner will now head to Wimbledon on a grass court high.
"It was very close at the end. Anastasia never gives up, she's a real
fighter. It was a question of nerves in the tiebreaker. But I've won my first
grass title (here). I've had a wonderful time" - Justine
Justine was taken by total surprise as the level of Myskina's tennis was of
superior quality compared to their Paris 4th round match less than two weeks.
The Russian came from 2-4 behind, and played outstanding points with her deep
two handed backhands to take the first set 4-6.
The great Belgian heard the wake up call, and fired back with a dazzling
array of grass style tennis. Net attacks, volleys, chips, slices, and were
Justine's calling cards as she diced up the Russian's groundstroke patterns.
Order was restored at 6-1 in the second set for Justine.
The third set showcased the push, and pull dynamics of the best previous
matches against Myskina for Justine. The set was played at a tension filled
pace where every point was treated as a match point. Naturally, the
conclusion was decided by the ultimate battle of will, desire, and skill with
the tiebreaker. Justine raced to her first grass court title since 2001 in
the Netherlands where she defeated Kim Clijsters in the final at the Heineken
Trophy. Justine won the tiebreaker 7-5.
