Henin Turns Up The Temperature
Friday, 30 June, 2006
French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne marched through to the fourth
round of The Championships with only a touch more difficulty than she had
encountered in the first two rounds, defeating 19-year-old Russian Anna
Chakvetadze 6-2 6-3.
Chakvetadze, small and sturdily built like her Belgian opponent, is also a
mighty hitter but without the penetrating accuracy of Henin-Hardenne, and her
fragile temper was revealed when she was the victim of a couple of poor line
calls.
The first of these occurred in the third game of the match when a forehand
appeared to land on the side line. The Russian celebrated with raised first,
only for the "out" call to be confirmed by the German umpire, Roland Herfel.
Chakvetadze was at full stretch to hold Henin-Hardenne at bay, and when she
was beaten by a glorious cross-court forehand she hammered her racket into
the turf and was fortunate to escape censure.
A second break of serve, putting Henin-Hardenne 5-2 ahead, left the Belgian
to serve out for a one-set lead after half an hour's play, and there was a
further setback for the Russian teenager when she dropped serve at the start
of the second set.
Though she did not wilt in the heat, which caused a ball girl to faint during
the first set, Chakvetadze could not get back into the match because she
could not get to break point on the Belgian serve.
Eventually, as Henin-Hardenne served for the match at 5-2, the Russian
managed that break but it proved of little benefit. Henin-Hardenne promptly
broke back to take the match. She has now won three rounds at a cost of only
nine games.
