The Final Countdown To Madrid
30/10/2006:
The iconic 1-handed backhand Belgian has been training with on court
practice sessions these past two weeks. She moves well, and gradually
building up timing and speed for her signature brand of high-end tennis
performance. Justine will announce her final answer for Madrid in the
next few days, don't miss it!
Sony Ericsson WTA Race to Madrid Update - Justine still #1
Justine is #1 on the Race to Madrid rankings, but Maria Sharapova's solid
European indoors run with titles in Zurich, and Linz has overtaken, the out
with injury, Mauresmo for the #2 spot. Justine preserves her first place
(3473 points out of 12 played tournaments), in front of Maria Sharapova (3297
points out of 14 played tournaments) and Amelie Mauresmo (3022 points out of
16 played tournaments).
The Russian's win in Linz has also lifted Sharapova in the regular full WTA
rankings over Justine to #2, but things will shift again once the points from
2005's year-end championships played in L.A are deducted and the virtual
points will be followed with each match in Madrid.
The Players
Only the top eight players qualified for the Sony Ericsson WTA Championships
with the last two spots taken by Martina Hingis, and Kim Clijsters.
Unfortunately, the lost at the Linz semi-final to Maria Sharapova had taken
Patty Schynder out of the race, despite a solid 2006 season. The same could
be said for others in the top 16 Dinara Safina, Nicole Vaidisova, Jelena
Jankovic, Anna Chakvedatze, Ana Ivanovic, and Francesca Schiavone have all
reached the highest rankings of their careers this season, and names to
lookout for with challenges ahead in 2007.
