The first day of competition on Tuesday night starts with fireworks as the
trio of players that are aiming for the #1 ranking are performing. Justine is
the third match of the evening, and she'll be on court around 21:30 hr -
22:00hr Madrid time. The round robin groups were drawn on Sunday afternoon with
Elena Dementieva doing the player honors of assisting.

JUSTINE's YELLOW GROUP OPPONENTS
Amelie Mauresmo (16 events, 3022 points)
2006 Season: Winner of AO and Wimbledon. Won two WTA Tier II events (Paris and
Antwerp).
Post US Open: Beijing finals lost to Kuznetsova (6-4 6-0). Lost in quarter-
finals at Moscow against Nicky Vaidisova. Withdrew at Zurich in quarterfinals
with shoulder injury. Trained for a week prior to Madrid. Tough road ahead
defending number one ranking starting with 2005 WTA Championship winner points
deductions.
WTA Championships history: 6th visit and defending title holder. Lost in 1st rd
in 1999. Lost in 1st rd. in 2001, final in 2003, and SF in 2004.
Head to Head against Justine: 10 meetings levelled at 5-5. This year two
victories for Mauresmo (finale in Australia on Justine's retirement, and
Wimbledon in three sets). Justine took revenge in two quick sets on clay in May
(SF Berlin).
Nadia Petrova (22 events, 2166 points)
2006 Season: Quarterfinal in AO. Won two Tier 1 Titles, and three Tier II's
(Doha, Amelia Island, Charleston, Berlin, Stuttgart). After an impressive clay
season she was injured, and lost in first round at RG. She missed Wimbledon due
to injury. A poor summer US hardcourt season followed losing in the opening
rounds at San Diego, Los Angeles, Montreal and New Haven. Went onto lose in the
rd. of 32 at the US Open.
Post US OPEN: Found form as winner of Stuttgart, finalist at Moscow and Linz.
WTA Championships history: This is only the second time that Petrova qualified.
At her debut visit in 2005 she never made it past the round robin group. (two
defeats, one win).
Head to Head against Justine: 7-2 in favour of Justine (WTA), + 2 victories for
Justine at Fed Cup. They clashed twice this year and matches were on clay.
Justine won the Fed Cup match in Liege, and two weeks later on the WTA tour it
was Petrova as winner in three sets. Justine's looking for payback this week.
Martina Hingis (19 events, 1926 points)
2006 Season: She's back, and turned a successful season into a berth for Madrid
. Best results quarterfinal at AO, and RG. Winner of two tournaments, a Tier I
on clay, and a Tier III Asian outdoor hardcourt. (Rome and Kolkatta)
Post US OPEN: Sad showing at her return to US Open with a second rd. defeat to
Virginia Razzano. Won Kolkota in India (Tier III), but failed in Seoul, Korea
to Sania Mirza at the rd. of 16. Played only one indoor European event, and
lost in the quarterfinals at Zurich to Kuznetsova.
WTA Championships history: 6th visit. SF in 1996, quarterfinal in 1997, won in
1998, final in 1999, and winner 2000. Martina qualified in 2001 and 2002 when
the tournament still used a round of 16 draw, but did not play due to injury.
Head to Head against Justine: 2-1 in favour of Martina Hingis. The two
victories are over a teen unmarried Justine in 2000 when she was still known as
Justine Henin. This year they played at Justine's first match of the season in
January at Sydney after four months off tour. Mrs. Henin-Hardenne defeated
Hingis 6-3 6-3.
