A Sense Of Occasion
04/02/2007:
There's a sense of special occasion for fans, and tennis purists in the
return to center stage of an enigmatic Belgian with the world's most amazing
1-handed backhand. Justine gave us a bit of insight into her current state of
mind in an exclusive interview before the season opener at Paris.
Hello Justine. How does it feel a day before the big return tournament back
on tour?
JH: I feel very serene. Since the end of November, I worked as much on my
fitness level as on my tennis technique. And here I am, I've come full
circle, and will enter my first tournament. I'm very impatient. I can't wait
to play on court in the environment of competition, and off course in front
of my supporters.
Looking back a bit to last season, 2006 was a great year.
JH: Yes, 2006 was the best. I couldn't do it without my team, but I also wish
to thank the fans, and supporters for the encouragements. It really lifted me
forward. All those victories and emotions are dedicated to them.
What's your objectives for this season - 2007?
JH: To try and reproduce the same results as last year, with the same final
exits (laughs) would be an excellent performance. To carry out a complete
season without injury remains my priority. The season will be very long and
if I can handle it without body pains, while remaining in good health; it
will be a success.
Back to Paris, and now for your first tournament of the year. It's quite a
special city for you. All those great times?
JH: Yes, it is. Paris always wll remain with me. It's a city where I've
experienced so many great emotions - joys. It all started in Paris for me,
and it's left an impression in me. I have many memories with these victories
at Roland Garros.
How do you feel about the Gaz de France?
JH: Practically all the best players will be there. It's my first tournament
of the season and it will be important that I find my form as quickly as
possible. My objective will be to win my first match, then build match by
match. The venue, Pierre de Coubertin has a good ambiance. The crowd is also
very good there, and want to see positive play. I will try to show my best
tennis.
The next week will be big for Belgian tennis, your long awaited return, and
the Belgian Davis Cup team is taking on Australia.
JH: It's brilliant for Belgian tennis. Our Davis Cup team made a successful
victory over Slovakia. Now in World Group against Australia. It will be an
explosive environment, but I think the match-up will be balanced. I have
great memories of the Fed Cup ties against Russia last year. The crowd was
incredible. I want the boys to benefit from the local atmosphere, and wish
for a victory to our national team.
What about Fed Cup for you this year? Made the decision yet?
JH: I've discussed it with my entourage. I decided not to take part in 2007.
This decision is justified by a very demanding tennis tour calendar. Last
year, I played extraordinary matches in Liege and in the Spiroudome at the
final against Italy. I hope to have similar fantastic moments in the future,
I sincerely wish the new captain and the team good luck.
Thank you Justine for taking time out of your schedule to grant us an
interview. We wish you much success in the return to tour and an excellent
2007 season.
*Justine is the #1 seed at the Gaz de France, and receives a bye for the
first round. She will play her first match on Wednesday or Thursday against
Emilie Loit or Eleni Daniilidou. Click here for the draw.
