Henin Does The Job
07/02/2007:
After a slow start, Justine Henin demonstrated great control to reason the
brave Emilie Loit (3-6, 6-2, 6-2). The Belgian qualified for the quarterfinals
where she could meet Tatiana Golovin.
The two players entered on the central court of the Stade Pierre de Coubertin
with about an hour delay on the daily schedule. Despite more than 2h50 of
match time on Monday, necessary to get rid of the Greek Eleni Daniilidou,
Emilie was clearly the player most physically ready. Out of the circuit since
her Masters victory in Madrid at the end of the 2006 season, Justine Henin
made her comeback this Wednesday afternoon after missing the Australian
events because of her separation with her husband.
Less energetic and obviously tense, the Belgian made numerous direct faults.
The French took advantage of her left-handedness to surprise her opponent by
making forehand shot accelerations along the line. She broke away 0/40 on
Justine’s serve at 4- 3 in her favour. Another forehand shot mistake on the
third opportunity enabled Emilie to serve for the first set. To the great
surprise to the cheery spectators of the Stade Pierre de Coubertin, the
French won the first set 6- 3, in just more than 30 minutes.
The former world n°1 relaxed at the beginning of the second set. She quickly
broke Loit’s serve to lead 3-0. The Belgian improved her score thanks to her
serve (14 aces throughout the match) and made it 5-2. After perhaps deciding
to start the next set on her serve, she rushed to the net. The tactic paid
off and after 55 minutes of match time, she came back to one set all: 3-6,
6-2.
Through this outburst of pride Justine, who never went any further than the
quarterfinals stage in Coubertin -in two participations, showed she didn’t
come to Paris aimlessly. Often injured, she is used to making incredible
comebacks on the circuit and since April 2006, she has played the finals of
the seven tournaments she committed to.
Continuing on her run, the triple winner of the French Open (2003, 2005,
2006) dug the gap in the sixth game to a comfortable 5-2 lead after
confirming her break. Eventually, she put an end to the match in 1h22 after
breaking for the fourth time (3-6, 6-2, 6-2).
On Friday, the Belgian will try to reach the last stage for the first time in
Coubertin. The name of her opponent will depend on the outcome of tomorrow’s
match between the French Tatiana Golovin and the Russian Ekaterina Bychkova.
Everyone is already dreaming of "Juju" being matched up against "Tati".
