The top seeded Belgian has now played in Dubai four times, previously taking the title in 2003, 2004 and 2006, and she has won all 16 of her matches. There were moments of brilliant tennis from both players, but at times it seemed as if Mauresmo was tiring after winning the title last week in Antwerp and then changing continents and surfaces to travel to Dubai. Henin broke serve immediately with an impressive backhand pass, and a winning forehand gave her a second break to lead 4-1. Mauresmo then had a golden opportunity to get back on level terms, breaking in the sixth game and holding three break points to pull back to 4-4. But Henin held off the threat, and went on to serve out the set to love. The second set remained tense, as both players mixed attack with strong defense. Mauresmo again missed an opportunity when Henin saved a break point that would have left the Frenchwoman leading 2-0. Games then went comfortably with serve until Mauresmo played a poor game at 5-5, double-faulting twice and dropping her serve to love. Henin then served out to love and claimed the title by winning the last 12 points. “I took the opportunities,” said Henin. “I was very aggressive but I was patient when I had to be. The second set was tough. I kept my serve and then she was under pressure at 5-5 and did two double-faults.” Henin appreciated how important it had been not to allow Mauresmo to level at 4-4 in the first set. “That was the key of the first set for sure, and probably of the match, because she was coming back in the match very strongly and I was starting to feel a little bit nervous. But I had good serves and was pretty aggressive,” she said. Mauresmo admitted that so many matches recently had taken their toll. “Especially in that second set,” said Mauresmo. “I said at the beginning of the week it was going to be difficult to get through to the end. I almost got there. It was only the matter of a few points here and there. She just played some great shots at the right time. “I’m really proud of being able to show the crowd here in Dubai some of my best tennis, but unfortunately I didn’t get the title. But I really enjoyed being here on the court and in the city. Everybody makes the stay really special and we all really enjoyed it.” The Dubai Tennis Championships is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and takes place under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Play continues at the Dubai Tennis Stadium from 26th February to 3rd March with the ATP event featuring Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Marcos Baghdatis.
