[News] USA win second Hopman Cup
The United States has won the Hyundai Hopman Cup international tennis
championship at Perth旧 Burswood Dome for the second time in 15 years.
The top seeds and hot favourites made a clean sweep of the singles, with
Serena Williams and James Blake winning in straight sets against the
Australian pair of Alicia Molik and Lleyton Hewitt.
An out-of-touch world No. 1 Hewitt lost 6-3, 6-4 in 64 minutes despite a
late fightback, when he saved a match point as Blake served for the trophy
the first time at 5-2, only to see the Aussie break service and extend the
contest. But Blake remained cool and served it out, helped firstly by an ace
and then a netted backhand shot from Hewitt.
The $1-million ITF event saw both nations chasing just their second Cup
victory, but for the Americans it came after being runner旧 up twice in the
last two years.
Earlier, the 21-year-old Williams was too powerful for Molik, winning 6-2,
6-3 in 50 minutes and conceding no more than one point in any of her eight
service games. In fact, Williams dropped just three points on service and
only one point after getting her first service into play.
A record crowd total of 82,079 fans shattered the previous tally for the
week-long event by just over 3,000 (79,057). The daily session record of
8,486 fans was not broken, but three sessions went past the 8,000 mark, with
the highest being the Australia versus Czech Republic day when 8,405 fans
were in the Dome.
