Hewitt to play doubles
February 6, 2003
WORLD No.1 Lleyton Hewitt has been handed a heavy Davis Cup workload, named
today to play both singles and doubles in the first-round tie against injury-hit
Great Britain.
Australian No.2 Mark Philippoussis will open Australia's 2003 campaign against
world No.331 Alan Mackin in tomorrow's first singles rubber on the purpose-built
clay court at the Sydney International Tennis Centre.
Hewitt will then meet 18-year-old world No.457 Alex Bogdanovic in the second
singles rubber.
Australian captain John Fitzgerald opted for Hewitt instead Wayne Arthurs to
partner Todd Woodbridge against Miles Maclagan and Arvind Parmar in Saturday's
doubles.
"At the moment, I feel fresh enough and eager enough to go out there and play
three matches," Hewitt said at today's draw.
"The doubles always pans out after day one anyway, depending on how you feel.
You can make changes and we have a lot of options up our sleeve, which is a good
thing for us.
"You always want a quick kill but if I get dragged into a dogfight then as long
as I come away with a win I couldn't care less."
Australia is an unbackable 50-1 on favourite to win the tie and advance to a
quarter-final against either Brazil at home or away to Sweden.
