Hewitt Puts No.1 on the Line
Lleyton Hewitt says he's in perfect shape to defend his Pacific Life Open title
- and the No.1 world ranking - despite a grueling week in Scottsdale last week
when he won through to the singles and doubles final. Hewitt must reach the
semifinals or better this week to retain the No.1 ATP Entry Ranking he's held
for 69 weeks, the seventh longest streak in ATP history, and the second longest
streak (behind Jimmy Connors' 160-week streak) for a first-time No.1.
Hewitt needs to hold the No.1 ranking for four more weeks to displace Stefan
Edberg (72 weeks) in seventh position in the all-time list of weeks at No.1.
If Hewitt loses before the semifinals this week, Andre Agassi will become the
oldest world No.1 in ATP history.
Although a shoulder injury has sidelined Agassi from this week's event, he will
pass Hewitt in the ATP Entry Rankings should Hewitt not defend the bulk of the
500 points he won here last year. Agassi had just five points to defend this
week because he lost in the first round to Michel Kratochvil last year.
Coming into Indian Wells, Hewitt is 330 points ahead of Agassi in the ATP Entry
Rankings. He will lose 500 points at the end of this week. Hewitt therefore
needs to reach the semifinals (which carry 225 points) to stay in the lead.
Hewitt , the tournament's top seed, arrived at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden
Monday after winning the Scottsdale singles final (d. Philippoussis) and losing
in a third-set tie-break in the doubles final with Hewitt. In was the first time
since 1995 that both singles finalists also appeared in the doubles final of
the same event.
"It was a good week.," Hewitt said. "Obviously, I didn't go in there with the
highest of expectations. More than anything I just wanted to get a few matches
under my belt before coming here. Yeah, it worked out perfect. I didn't play my
best tennis the first couple of matches. I got better and better as the week
went on. And I had to, as well, against the guys who I was playing against come
quarters, semis and finals. To go through tournaments these days without d
ropping a set, I'm pretty happy with that.
"I feel fine. I've played enough back-to-back tournaments when I've won one tour
nament and then come out. Sometimes I like feeling like you're on a bit of a
roll, as well. For me, it's a lot better going out there and playing, being
match tough, getting that match hardness under your belt more than just going
out there and practicing. Hopefully it's going to put me in good stead for this
week. "
In the first round Hewitt will play veteran Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui, who
defeated Hewitt in four sets in the fourth round of the Australian Open in
January. Reflecting on the loss, Hewitt said: "He played too well. I really had
very little opportunities to break serve. It's one of the few matches I didn't
break serve in the whole match. Four tight sets of tennis, I only lost serve
once. It's an extremely tough first round. "
