Lleyton Hewitt Joins Pete Sampras, Michael Chang in Draw
LOS ANGELES - Lleyton Hewitt, the current No. 1 ranked player
in the world and No. 1 in the final ATP Champions Race the
last two years, has committed to the 2003 Mercedes-Benz Cup,
July 28-Aug. 3, at the Straus Stadium of the Los Angeles Tennis
Center-UCLA. Previous commitments were received from all-time
Grand Slam king and reigning U.S. Open champion Pete Sampras,
and two-time Los Angeles champion Michael Chang, who will receive
a special tribute as the Tournament Honoree at the 77th annual
championship.
The current Wimbledon title holder, the 2001 U.S. Open
champion, and a two-time Tennis Masters Cup winner (Sydney, 2001;
Shanghai, 2002), Hewitt owns 19 ATP career singles titles and has
$11.3 million in career earnings. This year, Hewitt has a 16-2
singles record. He has won two singles titles in four outings,
the triumphs coming back-to-back at Scottsdale and Indian Wells
in March. Hewitt won six ATP singles titles in 2001 and five
last year
The 22-year-old Adelaide, Australia native was ranked No. 1
throughout 2002, only the fourth player (joining Jimmy Connors,
Ivan Lendl and Sampras) ever to rank No. 1 every week during
a calendar year. He was also the seventh player to finish No. 1
for at least two straight years.
"I love California, and try to schedule myself there as
often as I can," Hewitt said. "It's been a while since I
played L.A., and I look forward to that being my first
tournament after Wimbledon."
His appearance at UCLA will mark only the second time Hewitt has
played in the Mercedes-Benz Cup. He reached the quarterfinals in
1999, when he was forced to retire in a match with Andre Agassi
due to a left ankle sprain.
The Mercedes-Benz Cup features a 32-player singles draw and a
16-team doubles competition. The landmark Southern California
tournament is an International Series event on the worldwide ATP
men's professional circuit and offers total player compensation
in excess of $1 million.
Previous winners of the Mercedes-Benz Cup, whose history dates
to 1927, include Sampras, Andre Agassi, Chang, Jim Courier,
Michael Stich, Boris Becker, Richard Krajicek, Stefan Edberg,
John McEnroe, Connors, Arthur Ashe, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall,
Pancho Gonzalez, Jack Kramer, Don Budge, Ellsworth Vines and
Bill Tilden.
Proceeds from the Mercedes-Benz Cup, held in conjunction with
UCLA, benefit the grassroots programs of the non-profit Southern
California Tennis Association (SCTA) and UCLA. The SCTA offers
programs, leagues, and tournaments involving 300,000 juniors
and 50,000 adults and seniors. Inquiries regarding tickets and
information may be directed to the Mercedes-Benz Cup tournament
office on the UCLA campus. For information, please call 310-824-1010
