Hewitt battles through
Sportal
Australian Lleyton Hewitt has won through to the second round of the
Hamburg Masters in Germany.
Playing in his first match since leading Australia to victory in its Davis
Cup tie against Sweden last month, the world No.1 needed 2 hours and 23 min
utes to overcome local wildcard Markus Hantschk 6-1 4-6 6-4 and set up a
clash with France’s Arnaud Clement.
"I really wasn't sure how I was going to play," Hewitt said. "I came out
and hit the ball great right from the start. I didn't actually think he
played poorly in the first set. We had tight games. I just won a lot more
of the bigger points in that first set."
"Then, he went to another level after that. He played as well as he could
as well. It was a good match for me to guts out and pull out and to dig
deep."
Hewitt’s compatriot Scott Draper was unable to join him in the round of 32
, but did push second seed Carlos Moya of Spain all the way in a 6-3 5-7
6-3 result, while Swiss No.3 seed and defending champion Roger Federer
downed Max Mirnyi of Belarus 6-3 6-3.
"I'm happy with the way I played. I let him off the hook in the second set
and he made the most of it but overall I played a good match," Moya told
AFP.
"It was a tricky match," Federer added. "I was lucky on some points. But I
was able to take the chances I had. The courts are much slower than in Rome
. The fact that I did not play on Monday helped. Even if I had to travel, I
did not play tennis and I was able to rest."
